Shake It, Baby

D-BOX Technologies introduced its new GPH-120 Hybrid Motion System today at CES, and if the number of people lining up for their chance to try one out is any indication, this less-complicated, less-expensive take on the company’s classic motion control technology is going to be a hit.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the GPH-120 retails for $2999—no small chunk of change, but a significant price decrease for D-Box. In contrast to D-Box systems of the past, this one is also different in that there’s no big motion control box, just a simple USB interface.

I had the chance to try the GPH-120 out with Crysis: Warhead, a newish first-person shooter, and found the experience entirely engrossing, despite the fact that the chair only sports two motion actuators—both in the front—and a single stationary foot in the back. The motion is subtle for the most part, but packs a wallop when the action gets hot.

I also sat through a short demo of the recent Disney movie Bolt in a GPH-120 designed especially for home theaters. The differences were mostly cosmetic (chic beige upholstery instead of the racier look of the gaming chair), except for a sexy little footrest in lieu of the gas-and-brake-pedal mount of the former.

Pricing hasn’t been set in stone for accessories just yet, but D-Box reps hinted in hush-hush tones that the foot rest, wheel mount, and pedal mounts would probably sell for somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 apiece.
